Equality is an eternal topic of human beings, it had different meanings and appearances in differen periods. In the fields of western political philosophy and legal philosophy,equality is the permanent theme. If it mainly been studied from the perspective of the social values in the ancient and modern times, then to the contemporary, equality is no longer just a slogan and banner which called on people to stand against unequal regimes, but the theme of conformation which the the political regime and social system imagine. In China, people's pursuit of equality would be said that had a rough passage. After reforming and opening up, equality has been widely accepted,"the principle of equality before the law"has been written into the constitution. However, inequalities still exist, equality issues still plague the people. How to maximize the achievement of equality is not only the concerns of scholars. The appearing of the United States jurist, Ronald Dworkin, whose theory has enriched and deepened equality, brighten up us. His equality theory provides resources and materials for us to explore the equality. Based on this, this paper through interpretation of his latest book,"overeign virtue-the theory and practice of equality", tries to show out his theory of equality and put forward that equality is the sovereign virtue of the good society.This paper is divided into five parts. The first part is the introduction. Dworkin's theory of equality plays an active role in learning and studying equality for us as well as making the appropriate political decision. The second part analyzes the contemporary problem of equality in china. Meanwhile it points out a gross gap of equality between idealistic state and real state, and introduces academia's different views on how to resolve. the equality problem. The third part recommends the theoretical system of Dworkin's equality in detail. Its theoretical background and the origin are represented, the part mainly analyzes equality's rich contents from many aspects, such as the basis of equality, the relationship between equality and liberty, attitudes of welfare and equality, egalitarian community, resource equality, political equality, equality practice. The fourth part points out what is the specific mark when equality as the virtue in good society, performing an analysis on the realization of equality under the protection of the law and illustrating the government's responsibility for the realization of equality. The last part is conclusion. It indicates Dworkin's equality theory has some positive significance on the construction of a socialist harmonious society in China.
