In the past more than 30 years since China and the U.S. established diplomatic relations, the bilateral relations have weathered storms and moved forward. Recent several years could be said to be the best period in the development of Sino-U.S. relations. After Barack Obama became the U.S. president in 2009, he and Secretary of State Hilary Clinton reiterated again and again that Sino-U.S. relations are the most important bilateral relations in the world today. Obama met President Hu Jintao 3 times in less than one year after he took office and he paid the official visit to China in November of the same year. This is the first time in the history that U.S. president visited China in the first year after he took office, which showed that the Obama administration paid an unprecedented attention to Sino-U.S. relations. Generally speaking, Sino-U.S. relations are developing along a healthy road. However, recently a series of events like Obama's meeting with Dalai Lama, U.S. arms sale to Taiwan and the imposing of special protectionist tariffs on tire imports from China etc hurts Sino-U.S. relations and makes many people worried about the future of Sino-U.S. ties. Some people even think that Sino-U.S. relations will reach a low point and may break up. This paper analyzes the development and trend of Sino-U.S. relations from three level: international configuration, nation and individual person, and analyzes the base for Sino-U.S. cooperation-interdependence and the reasons for the temporary bilateral conflicts. In the end, the author will look to the future to predict the prospect of Sino-U.S. relations under Obama administration based on the analysis above.
