With higher education from elite education stage to mass higher education in China, higher education reform has been deepening and the sum of students enrolled in colleges and universities has been expanding rapidly. The diversity of sources of students, the complexity of students'thinking and behavioral characteristics and the diverse needs of the students' development make the status and role of university student management more and more concerned by the public. The specialization of university student management has been a major problem that influences the goal of personnel training in China's colleges and universities. This dissertation took the colleges and universities in Hubei province as an example, using methods of literature review, survey and comparison to conduct the research. It studied the level of the specialization of university student management in China quantitatively and qualitatively. The research explored the government factors, social factors, university factors and vocational factors that affected the specialization of university student management and made recommendations accordingly. This dissertation was divided into five parts. Part One illustrated the purpose and significance of this study, the literature review home and abroad, the research design and the innovation of the research. Part Two examined and compared the history of the start, the development and the specialization of university student management in China and in the U.S.Part Three constructed an indicator system and a set of models to measure specialization of university student management. Part Four used models to analyze data collected, explored the level of specialization of university student management, and explored the factors affecting the development of specialized university student management. Part Five described the research conclusions, recommended countermeasures to promote specialized students management, and pointed out the limitations of the research. In the research, the key concept specialization of university student management has been developed into 6 dimensions:organization specialization, work specialization, knowledge systematization, significance of social and economic benefits, market acceptance and work automation. Accordingly, a 4-level indicator system was constructed to measure the condition of the specialization of university student management. The primary level indicators include:organization specialization, work specialization, knowledge systematization, significance of social and economic benefits, market acceptance and work automation. Each primary level indicator further developed into secondary level indicators. For example, organization specialization developed into professional division, professional access and professional norms. The 6 primary level indicators altogether developed 24 secondary level indicators. The 24 secondary level indicators further developed into many third level indicators. The third level indicators then developed into the fourth level measurable variables. After the construction of the system of 4 level indicators, the research designed models to measure values of the specialization in its five stages of development. Ultimately, the values of the specialization of university student management have been drawn.Based on the data collected in the survey, the research measured the values of the specialization of university student management in the case. The real values about the current condition of the specialization of university student management in China were then compared with the constructed indicators of the five stages development of the specialization of university student management. The result showed that current condition of the development of the specialization of university student management in China is in the transition from secondary stage to quasi-professional stage. The research showed that specialized university student management has a short history in China and lacks accumulation for relevant construction. The development of specialization of university student management in China has reached upper-middle level but has not reached a quasi-professional level. And the six dimensions of specialization of university student management were not balanced. Different types of colleges or universities have different levels of specialization of student management. Factors of the government, society, and university and student management vocation affected and restricted the development of specialized university student management in China. The innovation of this study is to have proposed a set of indicators and models to measure and analyze the level of specialization of university student management, quantitatively and qualitatively. This research has made up for the lack of qualitative evaluation in this field.
