Research On The Specialization Of Student Advisers In Chinese Colleges

Being a unique feature of Chinese college student administration, student advisors system has been proved effective to help cultivate students' moral character and administer students' affair. However, with the development of higher education in China and constant social changes, which the present student advisors system no longer adapted to, many new challenges appear. The solution to this problem is to foster professional student advisors.Student advisors specialization helps to enhance college student administration level and further develop higher education. In recent years, Chinese central government and local governments quite support college student advisors specialization project by providing relevant favorable policies and regulations. Meanwhile, many universities have done some relevant practices and got some instructive experiences. In addition, the project has also drawn some attention of scholars who have done some theoretical study. Overall, however, those policies are no more than instructional advices and haven't been legalized yet; the practices carried in some universities are limited in individual university and haven't been acknowledged by the whole society; the study done by the scholars stay in the level of student affair administration, and they only provide the general idea on how to push this project, presenting neither systematic theory background nor feasible measures. At present, there are still many problems of college student advisors system development.The writer has investigated student advisors, teachers and students from seven universities in Songjiang college town. Through questionnaires and interviews, the writer has got a clear idea about overall situation of student advisors system development, especially some problems of the present system. In this paper, the writer reports his investigation and analyses reasons accounting for those problems. Aside from that, the writer also compares student advisors system of China with student administration work in some developed countries with the intention to seek some helpful experiences.Firstly, we must put efforts on the promotion of student advisors' specialized position, which is the core of the student advisors specialization. On this part, it's of great importance to put emphasis on student advisors' specialized subjects, educational background improvement, theoretical study of work as well as the specialization on personnel.Secondly, student advisors specialization requires certain qualities, including effective communication skills, high responsibility, knowledge of psychology, rich experiences of life, etc.Thirdly, noble professional ethics ensures the student advisors system. Perfect moral character, solicitude for students, devotion to work should be paid attention to, however, setting good examples inclusive.Fourthly, flexible management provides assurance in terms of system, including establishing of independent management institution, setting up systems for professional titles, perfecting the evaluation systems, learning theories of career management.Fifthly, the improvement of training system, the conscientious analyses of training demand, the perseverance of comprehensive, professional, social, regular training are also should been given the priority.Based on the questionnaire analysis and comparison between Chinese and overseas student administration system, this paper has proposed some solutions and suggestions to improve college student advisors specialization.
