As an important part of the teachers and the management team in institutions of higher education, counselors are the backbone of the teachers to promote the ideological and political education of college students. Having got the significant positions to educate, manage and serve students, the counselors play an important role in promoting the self-development of students. In recent years, our country has promulgated a series of documents including the "Proposals on Further Strengthening and Developing the Ideological and Political Education of College Students" by the Sate Council and the "Rules on the Team Building of Counselors in Regular Institutions of Higher Education", which make the team building of counselors more important. How to select and engage excellent counselors with strict standards has become the important foundation of the subsequent human resources in institutions of higher education.Considering the situation of the selection and engagement of counselor in universities in our country and learning the advanced experiences from the special management of student affairs, the paper has analyzed the shortages of the old selecting methods of counselors which are mainly the unclearness of the selecting standards, the singleness of the performance, the low professional qualities of the testers and the more attention to the outer competency rather than the inner competency. At the same time, according to the view point of the work characteristics and the basic requirements of counselors, the paper puts forward the personality traits of the counselors to make the people match the positions. On this foundation, we introduce the competency, the post matching, the PDCA Circulation and the 360°evaluating theory, and expatiate on this problem systemically with the specific practical method of the selection process, the resource supports, the cost benefit and the cycle methods, in order to explore to establish a project of counselor engagement that adapts to the present situation of Lanzhou University. The method of counselor engagement based on the above theories pays much attention to personalities and motivations, advocates the post matching and uses scientific methods for the equality control. The focus is that the development potential of candidates should be tested. Thus it can help the university to select and engage excellent talents with the most development potential, which are suit to the organizations and the positions.At last, with the analysis and evaluation, the paper puts forward the suggestions and plans for the subsequent improvement of the selecting methods of counselors in Lanzhou University.
