School motto, is not only the soul of school culture, but the core in school cultural construction. It inherits the ideas of school administration, cultural deposits and the unique school spirits. Its refined words reflect the common ideal, faith, spiritual pursuit and standard behaviour of both students and the staff. School mottos play a very important role in the formation of school cultural features.School motto is significant in the formation of school material culture. It plays an instructional role in the choice of school geographical environment, the formations of school programme and geographical distribution, the design of architectural style, the arrangement of human landscape, and the layout of plants. School motto is also vital in the formation of system culture. It has directive function in the formation of post duty, the system of teaching management, the system of rewards and penalties, the system of daily life management and the system of school meetings. Meanwhile, school motto is indispensable in the formation of spiritual culture. It acts an important part in the following aspects:school propaganda, the formation of school style, teaching and study style, the optimization and combination of after-school culture, the development of psychological consultation and the guidance of classics reading.However, school motto, an important part of school culture, as well as an embodiment of school management, has not been paid enough attention in many schools. There are some problems in school mottos practice. The research, based on an investigation of the practice of school motto in DY Primary School in LW District reveals that the motto has some problems in itself. Mottos are so similar. They are just slogans. They cannot be the bridge between the school cultural features and everyone in the school. As to the relationship between mottos and school cultural features, mottos cannot embody the school cultural features. Mottos can influence material culture but they cannot reflect the characteristics of a school.The reasons why we cannot make full use of mottos are:First, school administrators do not have a thorough grasp of the school motto. Second, they cannot decide how to develop cultural construction independently. Third, they ignore propaganda and education on mottos. Fourth, the mottos cannot embody school cultural features.Therefore, in order that mottos can play a significant role in school cultural feature construction, efforts should be made as follows:First, students and teachers should be encouraged to have a thorough grasp of the school motto. Second, relative system concerning school cultural construction should be innovated. Third, negative influence of inertial thinking should be avoided. Last but not least, school mottos should be paid more attention in school cultural feature construction.
