Mass culture originates from the development of the modern metropolises and is produced by the cultural industry. Mass culture is a kind of modeling and flatten cultural pattern which is disseminated by the mass media such as broadcasting, television and internet in order to entertain most people in a society. Compared with the serious art, elite culture and dominant culture, mass culture is a kind of popular culture which prevailed in European and American countries, especially in the USA in the 1930s. In China, the emergence of mass culture can trace back to the early 1990s with the development of the market economy, information industry and mass media. It has been developing rapidly due to its open, popular, commercial, entertainment, routine characteristics. Mass culture has a subtle influence on the values and aesthetic taste of the college and university students, which challenges their moral education.Mass culture has become a realistic context of today's college and university students'maral education and can not be ignored.Educators and researchers should pay more attention to mass culture's influence on college and university students by reexamining the relations between mass culture and moral education in order to find a better way to improve the effectiveness of moral education, to promote this great project of college and university students'maral education.The paper makes a discussion from the following five aspects:In the first part, both mass culture and moral education are discussed. On the basis of analyzing the connotation and classification of culture, the paper discusses the definition and characteristics of mass culture. Then the paper discusses the definition, purpose of moral education. In the end, five sections in the process of moral education are elaborated, which include improving moral cognition, cultivating moral emotion, strengthening moral belief, exercising moral will and developing good moral habits.In the second part, the paper mainly discusses the influence of mass culture on college and university students from positive and passive aspects.In the third part, the paper points out that mass culture has brought great challenges to college and university students'moral education, which include challenges to the purpose, concepts, content, methods and patterns of moral education.In the fourth part, the paper discusses the principles of moral education we should stick to. We should try to improve the integration of plural values while maintaining one leading values on the basis of ensuring the diverse development of others.In the fifth part, the paper puts forward four relevant countermeasures to college and university students'moral education against the backdrop of mass culture. Firstly, establish open and democratic student-oriented concept. Secondly, improve efficiency and patterns of moral education by taking advantage of mass culture. Thirdly, renew and enrich the content of moral education in order to meet the challenge of mass culture. Fourthly, create healthy and upward campus culture to reduce the passive influence of mass culture.From the perspectives of philosophy, ethics, sociology, economics and Pedagogy, the paper analyzes the influence and challenge brought by mass culture, and then discusses the methods and strategy of moral education in order to give support to the implementation and development of college and university students' moral education.
