By the analysis on English tests for the college admission examination in the past three years, we can come to a conclusion that the present English teaching/learning is attaching more importance to students'practical ability, instead of their command of grammar. Most of vocabulary in the tests concerns something students can usually see and use in their daily life, so they are very practical. The understanding of the question itself rather than the grammar becomes the major criterion for students'language proficiency.The present research starts with the theories of vocabulary acquisition, then emphasizes the significance of vocabulary teaching, and next gives a review on the development of vocabulary teaching, after that the author analyzes the current situation of vocabulary teaching. The next step is to give a close analysis on the English tests for the college admission examination in the past three years. The focal analysis is the relationship between vocabulary and listening, vocabulary and reading, vocabulary and translation and vocabulary and composition respectively. On the basis of the analysis above and my understanding of my students, I put forward the following methods to improve vocabulary teaching:achieve the balance between the'depth'and'width'of vocabulary, have a full use of context, attach great importance to lexical chunks and reasonably use the rules of memorization. Although these methods have been discussed and tried on various occasions, this paper will give fresh and detailed examples with implementation in English class.Different from other essays about vocabulary learning strategies, the feature of this paper is to focus on the efficiency of vocabulary teaching according to the objective analysis of English test papers for the college admission examination in the past three years. The purpose is to pave the way for students'future self-study as well as for better performance in college admission examination.
