Language sense and the use of it in teaching have become a heat topic for both Chinese and English teaching, especially in the past 20 years. The purpose of the thesis is to study English language sense and to find out the interrelationship between English language competence and English language sense by investigating students of Senior Three and Junior Three.Modern psychology research also reveals that language and psychology, intelligence and cognition have close relationships. Language is a whole part which is composed of its internal system and the external system. The process of mastering a language is not only to master the external system of it but also to construct an internal system in our brain. The language acquisition is achieved the day when language internal system is built in the brain. Though the cultivation of English language sense is not the final goal of our English learning, yet it is meaningful for our English teaching to know how to construct and strengthen language sense.The English language competence not only contains internal language knowledge but also includes the pragmatic function of language. English cognitive abilities, English grammar ability and English culture knowledge which compose the whole English language ability. The thesis is expected to try to find out the relationship between language competence and language sense and to provide some new perspectives on foreign language teaching and learning in China.In order to find out the relationship between students'English language competence and English language sense, this article uses empirical research, including questionnaire, interview and classroom observation. The survey has found that there is a significantly positive correlation between students'English language competence and English language sense and proposed the strategies of training English language sense.We can develop students'English language sense in three aspects. First of all, it is a necessary condition to improve the students'English language ability; Secondly, the culture input and cultural integration can help students improve their language sense; Third, English language thinking can enhance students'English language sense.The innovations of the thesis are as follows:First, the concept of English language sense is a relatively new one; second, the correlation between English language competence and English language sense are neglected, so the thesis hopes to provide some foundation work to it; third, the research methodology of the thesis adopts the combination of test, interview and classroom observation.The structure of the thesis is organized as follows:Chapter one is the literature review. The author makes an introduction to the origin and development of language sense, language competence, English language competence and English language sense. In this chapter, the research questions of the thesis are proposed through present the limitation of previous study on linguistic sense. Chapter two is theoretical framework which is the essential part for us to do our further research. In order to investigate the correlation between English language competence and English language sense, a survey about language sense in English is made in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 is the analysis and discussion of the survey's results. The analysis showed that there is a significantly positive correlation between students'English language competence and English language sense. Chapter 5 is the conclusion of the thesis including three parts:The first part is some findings derived from the analysis of survey data. Since there is a significantly positive correlation between students'and English language sense, we should improve students'English language competence in the cultivation of language sense. The second part is some suggestions to foreign languages teaching and the third part is about some limitations of the thesis.The thesis hopes to do some basic work and provides some useful information for the study of English language sense.
