Political mentality, or the psychological state toward politics, is the cognition, emotion, evaluation and motivation on the political tendency of the subject in a certain period of time, and plays a dominant role in the political behaviour of the subject. The political psychology of college students is the internal driving force of their political direction and political behaviour, and the core of their political quality. Besides, it is also the key to establishing the correct political ideas and the psychological foundation to forming the correct views of the world, life and value. Therefore, the study of political mentality of college students has its significance for the harmonious development of our country's politics, the innovation of the ideological and political education, and the healthy development of the students themselves.Through substantial document study, this paper, whose title is "The Political Attitudes Study of Contemporary College Students", has elaborated the background and the significance of this study. It has also summarized and generalized the current research conditions and the development tendency of political psychology at home and abroad. Meanwhile, it has defined the basic definition, content and features of the political mentality of college students. The study, using the undergraduates from major universities in Dalian as samples and the form of the questionnaire survey, has investigated the present situation of the political psychology of those college students, and by analysis, has come to the conclusion that the mainstream political psychology of the college students is positive, despite the fact that some students have a negative political mental state in some aspects. Consequently the study analysis has presented the dual characteristics of college students' political mentality: On the one hand, college students have a high level of trust in the Central Committee of the China's Communist Party with Comrade Hu Jintao as the General Secretary, and have full affirmation of our country's great achievements and fundamental experience in last three decades since China's reform and opening up. They have particular confidence in the socialist construction led by our Party, high recognition of the party leadership, and strong support and value on the policies made by the Party and the government. They also uphold the unity of our ethnic groups and our nation, and are able to consciously safeguard the interests of the nation, which reflects their good sense of civic responsibility. Most students have a positive tendency of participation in politics and strong political beliefs, with a pro-positive attitude toward the status of development of democratic policy in our nation and toward the efficacy of government agencies. Besides, they are "interested" in the political affairs. However, on the other hand, some students deviate in the cognition of some social issues, thus leading to their low enthusiasm in politics, obvious political alienation and negative emotional tendency of those issues. On this basis, this paper has conducted a systematic analysis of the reasons for their negative political psychology. Finally, from the perspective of the ideological and political education, this paper has proposed the measures of cultivating positive political mentality of college students. We should build a working team of ideological and political education which has outstanding political quality and ability to highlight related business. In the meanwhile, it is also important to enrich the ways and means of ideological and political education, to continuously expand the ideological and political education platform, and to take efforts to create the positive, fair and open political cultural atmosphere in campus.
