The senior high school is a vital period for adolescents to grow up into adults, as well as a period to foster their autonomy. Furthermore, it has a crucial influence on individuals'lifetime development. Through data retrieval, it is found that there is little study on current autonomous learning and guidance strategies for senior high school students, most of which is not intensive and operational enough. Thus, it is hard to be fulfilled in practice.In the light of above-mentioned reasons, this thesis will analyze the motivation and meaning of autonomous learning as well as its underpinning theories. Based on these theoretical claims, a survey was carried out focused on students'current autonomous learning in Suzhou Tin Ka Ping Experimental Senior High School. Meanwhile, by theoretical summarizing and analyzing, effective guidance principles and strategies will be proposed.In this thesis literature reviews, questionnaires, interviews and case studies are all employed. The questionnaire design is consistent with Autonomous Learning Scale for Primary and Middle School Students written by professor Pang Weiguo from East China Normal University. The results are as follows: I. Autonomous learning ability of senior high school students is at a medium level. II. There is no significant difference between boys and girls in autonomous learning. III. Autonomous learning presents a downward tendency as the grade increases. IV. Students of science are better than students of arts in autonomous learning. V. Some problems about autonomous learning in senior high school cannot be neglected, which mainly include the students'weakness in learning strategies, the necessary improvement of learningenvironment and the need of enhancing learning motivation as well as self-monitoring.Based on the theoretical analysis of teachers'guidance for autonomous learning and practical surveys in senior high school, this thesis put forward guidance principles for autonomous learning and further recommends strategies to direct it, which embrace the strategy of fostering motivation, the strategy of optimizing lessons, the strategy of instructing learning approaches, assessment strategy, resource utilization strategy and the strategy of emphasizing discrepancy in teaching. All these strategies will be further applied in teaching practice and its scientificity and operability will both be verified as well.
