During the age of globalization, the importance of cross-cultural communication is recognized by more and more people. As language is inseparable from culture and they rely on each other, the success of cross-cultural communication depends much on people's language proficiency, while language proficiency helps to facilitate cross-cultural communication. English teaching, therefore, is also inseparable from cultural education. Developing intercultural communicative competence is important to the quality of English teaching in junior high schools and the English proficiency of students. However, the time of class teaching is very limited. The cultural contents in the texts alone are not enough for training students'awareness of cultural difference.School-based curriculum is a good way to provide students with more cultural information. Exploring the development of school-based curriculum by a case study, the thesis wishes to exemplify how school-based curriculum can cultivate students' cultural competence. This research consists of the compiling of teaching materials, the effective implementation of school-based curriculum, and the appropriate evaluation system. The study aims to enhance the students'ability of cross-cultural communication and improve their English proficiency by help exposing them to more cultural knowledge as well as provide effective feedbacks for the teachers and improve their teaching.The research finds that school based curriculum not only meets the purposes mentioned above but also promotes the professional development of teachers. In addition, it also helps a school form its own characteristics.
