Nowadays, senior English classroom teaching has been criticized for being low efficient.Students can get high marks in the exams, but they are incapable of using English in dailycommunication, which results from the wrong teaching ideas of the English teachers. Theyignore the importance of cultural education in language teaching. Language is the carrier ofculture and the tool of communication. Therefore, the objective of English learning is to cultivatethe students’ ability of cross-cultural communication, based on the understanding of the Britishand American culture. However, on the one hand, we don’t have many study periods. On theother hand, the content of the national curriculum is fundamental, so it is impossible to satisfythe needs of cultural education in class. In this way, it is necessary to develop school-basedcurriculum based on the textbooks to enrich teaching resources so that students’ ability ofcross-cultural communication can be cultivated. After several rounds of curriculum reform, the three-level administration system has beenset up: national curriculum, district curriculum and school-based curriculum, which bring policysupport for the development of school-based curriculum. The research on the development ofschool-based curriculum has become the focus of the curriculum research, but the recent relevantstudies focus on the theoretical level, rather than the practical level, let alone the research of thedevelopment and practice of cross-cultural oriented school-based curriculum. This paper aims at exploring the practical development system of school-based curriculumtargeting students’ ability of cross-cultural communication by analyzing and summarizing thedevelopment and practice of the author’s school-based English curriculum development. Withthe help of the questionnaires, we can have a clear idea of the students’ demand and then definethe curriculum objective, content as well as the assessment standard.Relevant research and the theoretical basis on school-based curriculum and cross-culturalcommunication are first expounded. Then the author focuses on the summary of the experienceof the development, practice and assessment of school-based English curriculum in the author’sschool. The curriculum plan, including the curriculum objective, content and assessmentstandard is put forward by means of questionnaires. In the end, the paper analyzes the problems existing in the development and practice of school-based curriculum and put forwardssuggestions related to those problems. The successful development and practice of school-basedcurriculum depends on not only the improvement of the teachers’ professional quality and theactive involvement of the students, but also the carefully designed school-based curriculum.
