| Chinese Ministry of Education has formulated New Standard of English Curriculum, which proposes new concept and stipulates new requirements for the basic English education. With the reformation of the fundamental education entering into a new historical period, developing students'subjectivity in senior high schools has become an important issue. Subjectivity refers to the functional characteristics of a subject, which can be displayed in the interactive activity of the subject and the object. New Standard of English Curriculum and new teaching material break the traditional teaching mode, pay much attention to students'center position, and aims to promote students'subjectivity by using task-based teaching approach.Based on the four aspects, namely, selectivity, autonomy, initiative and creativity raised by Dr. Zhang Tianbao about students'subjectivity, the present research attempts to investigate the actual situation of the development of students'subjectivity in English class in senior high schools and reveals the problems in the development of students'subjectivity in English class in senior high schools. This research took questionnaire and interview as methodology. The questionnaire took 500 second-year or third-year students from five average senior high schools in Xiangfan, Hu Bei province as its subjects. Meanwhile, the interview was conducted with 12 English teachers of those five average senior high schools. To obtain data, the students were asked to respond to questionnaire consisting of 19 items about the actual situation of the development of students'subjectivity in English class in senior high schools. The interview was made with the teachers about the teaching activities or teaching methods that commonly used in English class. All the data collected from the research were analyzed by frequency statistics.Data analysis indicates that the overall development of students'subjectivity in English class in senior high schools is not good. Most students lack selectivity, autonomy, initiative as well as creativity, that is to say, they lack subject ability. Furthermore, this research reveals that English teachers of senior high schools begin to realize students'center position and respect their subjectivity in some cases, but most of them still adhere to the traditional teaching approach which cannot provide adequate conditions for the development of students'subjectivity in English class in senior high schools. From the findings above, this thesis will give some suggestions for promoting students'subjectivity in English class in senior high schools. In teaching process, it is advisable that teachers improve students'subject ability, establish the concept of subjectivity education and reform teaching mode in order to provide favorable conditions for the development of students'subjectivity in English class in senior high schools. |
