Initiative means that the individual acts according to his own set or stated goal to give full subjective initiative and meet the needs of society and their own without relying on outside forces.Middle school students' English learning initiative directly relates to the success of their English study.Initiative learning is one of the most effective ways to learn English. However , owing to the deeply rooted examination-oriented education in China,the efficiency of our high school English teaching is low,and students' learning initiative is also not very high. We English teachers must take necessary measures to motivate the students'initiative and help the students realize what they really lack and what they really need. This thesis aims at investigating the English learning initiative of Chongqing NO.37 middle school students and, on this basis, exploring some measures to develop and improve students'learning initiative.The author made a survey to study the students themselves and the factors that affect their English study, like the studying habits, lifestyle and some other elements form home, environments and so on. On the basis of the theories of the experts at home and broad, like Vygotsky's theory of zone of proximal development and Constructivist Learning Theory, the author puts forward the concrete measures to develop and improve the students'English learning initiative. In doing so, we can have a deeper understanding of the English teaching and have a better approach to English teaching in the future.
