To certain extent, the teaching quality of schools is restricted by students’ learninginitiative. As a result, it has been an urgent task to do research on how to elevate andcultivate the students’ initiative for education of schools. At present, students’ learninginitiative has been got many teachers and scholars’ attention, and the different conceptsabout learning initiative has been put forward. Learning initiative in this articlefunctions as the main power system to activate, strengthen, maintain as well as adjustthe learning activity.I conducted a survey of present condition of the students’ English learninginitiative in class1-8, grade2in Chongqing X Primary school in September2013.Fromthe results of the survey, I found that the students’ English learning initiative in classone to eight, grade two is generally weak. Through the SPSS analysis data, I select oneof the English learning whose initiative is poorer as an experimental class. Afterunderstanding the factors influencing the students’ English learning initiative as well asfinding the reason of lack of English learning initiative, I proposed the method by takingthe students as the main body to improve students’ English learning initiative: First,stimulate students’ direct needs to learn English through the multimedia teaching and"reading picture books" activities; Second, establish cooperative learning group mode topromote students’ indirect learning needs; Third, through the "listen to read Englishevery day" activities to cultivate students’ good study habits and formulate specificlearning goals; Fourth, through "three minutes before class" activities, strengthenstudents’ confidence of learning English. Fifth, tighten the parent-school contact,encourage children more frequently in order to let the students experience positiveemotions. After four-month-study, with theory associated with practice, in January2014,a questionnaire survey was conducted on experimental classes again. The survey foundthat students’ English learning initiative has been improved obviously. Their results ofEnglish achievement also rose, which confirmed that the methods taken to improvestudents’ English learning initiative has done certain contribution. In the process of experiment, the main research methods are: literature method, experimental method,questionnaire investigation and interview method. Chen ping, Zhu Min’s methods oflearning initiative questionnaire for reference index, including direct learning needs,indirect learning needs, learning goals, self-confidence, and emotional feelings fiveaspects are referenced. After the experiment, through sorting all kinds of materials, thispaper gives suggestions for teachers, schools, parents and students respectively from theaspects of psychology and pedagogy, hoping to help more children improve theirinitiative in learning English.The experimental study shows that it’s significant to improve the initiative ofstudents learning English, students’ interest in learning English as well as the Englishgrades by cultivating students self-confidence, forming good learning habits andstimulating learning initiative.
