The development of education in china is unequal, especially in the west. The level of education is low in national areas. People have paid much attention on the dropouts during the compulsory education. The dropout has profound and long-term influence. It hurts students physically and mentally, at the same time it limits the development of students'careers. It also wastes plenty of educational resources and causes a series of social problems.The dropouts of students are the constraint factors of the nine year compulsory education. It is the focal point and difficult point of the society.This paper is completed after the author investigates in Yaozu Village, Libo County, and Qiannan State, Guizhou Province. The investigation lasts for two months. Taking the Yao students for example, the author did the research by observing and interviewing. The paper describes the dropouts of Yao students according to the theories of cultural transfer and cultural conflict. It analyses the reasons of the dropout and tries to put forward some solutions.The first part of the paper introduces the background of the selected topic and the train of thought of the research. It introduces the present situation of the dropout at home and abroad. This paper analyses the present situation of the dropout in Yaoshan by comparing with other areas. The second part introduces the history of Yao education and its reform. The paper sets the dropout of Yao students for example and researches it by fieldwork. In some degree, the difficult educational position of Yao stands for the difficulty the people in hilly areas meet during the transfer of the livelihood. The third part introduces the discoveries of the research. The phenomenon of dropout exists in Yao students generally and the Yao students are weary of studying. The rate of missing the class and dropout is very high while the enrolment rate for children of school age and rate of students at school is very low. This paper compares the dropout of Yao with the dropout of the student in china. The fourth part analyses the reasons of the dropout from three aspects:the transition of the livelihood in Yaoshan, transition from hunting to farming, the change of Yaoshan traditional culture and the inefficient poverty alleviation. The fifth part introduces the effects of the dropout of Yao students. It tries to put forward some measures to solve this problem:Giving priority to the development of education and reforming the rural education according to specific cases for the impoverished rural education policy; increasing national education expenditure; adjusting rural compulsory education content; improving the quality of school education and strengthening rural teachers team construction; respecting national culture and religious beliefs of Yao and guiding cultural transition timely.After the research of the present position of Yao education and the economy and culture of Yao, the paper tries to find out the reasons of the dropout. By the method of fieldwork, the main cause of the dropouts is the conflict between traditional Yao culture and the mainstream culture of school. The paper puts forward some solutions according to the causes of the dropout, hoping that it will be helpful to solve the similar issues.
