Outdoor sports safety is a relatively new research field. The current study on it is from the perspective of outdoor sports participants which aims to explore its universal meaning. Based on the literature review, the research significance is discussed and the present situation of outdoor sports safety is summarized. With the guide of empirical research methodology, outdoor sports safety is studied based on the sampling inZhengzhou. By means of questionnaires(400 questionnaires with a collection rate of 69.5%), field investigation, interview, empirical analyses of outdoor sport safety in Zhengzhou are made from the aspects of safety forms, safety cognition and experiences of the participants. The findings include the following:(1) outdoor sports safety is featured by being collective, extensive, disguised and sudden and the main outdoor sports safety problems include injury, motor symptoms, poisoning, animal attack, losing direction and other sudden accidents; (2) there is close relations between outdoor sports safety cognition of the participants and the demographic status and social contexts and there is individual difference which reflects the different needs of the participants and can be used as references by the safety administration and the organizers; (3) the safety cognition of the outdoor sports participants reflects their safety experiences to some extent and mutual influences can be foundbetween the two with significantly positive correlation, further research of which will be meaningful for studies on the outdoor sports administration, operation of the clubs and behavioral patterns of the participants; (4) mistaken ideas of cognition on outdoor sports safety can be found easily among the outdoor sports participants in Zhengzhou, which shall draw our attention; (5) through analyses of the causes for the outdoor safety problems, various influential factors have been identified which generally can be categorized into four aspects:the individual, the environment, the administration and the system.
