Since 1980s, the urban-rural gap is widening with the rapid development of the industrialization and urbanization. This leads to the situation that a large number of rural labors migrate to the cities. Shanghai, the most urbanized city in China, will attract many framers nearby it to migrate to cities around it. The social structure of village Q located in the outskirts of Shanghai has experienced great change because of the large number of the local people who moved out the village. Vacant land and abandoned houses make the village in a declined state. However, the large number of outside people who moved into the village has been the new force to sustain the development of the village. Based on the changes on the social structure of village Q, the article discusses the ending and continuance of the villages. With the use of the structural functionalism and daily life theories, the article explores the social relationship and the openness of the cultural traditions in villages, in which aspects the village terminated, and how villages continue with its development with the coming of the outside people. The author tries to describe the pattern of village change from daily life of the villagers, and provide reference to the coastal village changes.The article is divided into six parts. The first part is the introduction, mainly on the awareness of problems, the origin of the study, research review and the definition of core concepts. The second part is the analysis framework, research methods and summary of the sample village. Based on the theory of structural functionalism and daily life theory, select the case with the sampling method, and collect materials with literature and semi-structured interviews. The third part describes the existing social structure. This part also describes the changes on the population, land, industries and social communities during the processes of original farmers moving out and the migrants moving in. The fourth part discusses the ending of the village based on social and cultural boundaries. The fifth section focuses on the continuation of the village through the newly built social relationship by the coming of the outsiders and their daily life. Partâ…¥is the conclusion. The author believes that the villages are between the rural and urban, and the ending of the village is just in some traditional aspects. The village will develop into communities with the coming of the outsiders and complete the urbanization in finally. The ending process isn't the same as non-agricultural,it will be a long and arduous journey.
