It is widely recognized that listening ability plays a crucial part in English learning. But people didn't realize it until the 1950s. People have paid more attention to listening study since then. In senior schools in China, listening teaching had been totally neglected in English teaching before listening became a testing item in National Entrance Examination for College. However, students'listening ability is very weak, especially in rural areas.This thesis will discuss the input hypothesis in Chinese rural teaching environment from the language input.It will help the teacher how to choose the listening materials. It is aimed at enhancing the classroom efficiency and improving the quality of classroom teaching.Especially it is important for the young teachers who have no experience. This thesis analyzes two senior school students in Hongtong county. It shows the teaching results through the comparison between the beginning of the term and at the end of the term. The whole thesis is divided into five parts. Chapter one is the introduction. It illustrates the importance of listening ability and current situation of listening teaching in classroom English teaching in Chinese senior schools. It points out the practical significance of the research we have in listening teaching.Chapter two states the theories related to listening. It emphasized Krashen's Input Hypothesis and L.Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Deve1opment.Chapter three shows the experiment in Hongtong county through the listening input. It shows us that the material of the listening can improve students'listening ability. In chapter four I analyzed and concluded the results of the experiment of Chapter Three and gave some suggestions to teachers and students. Chapter five draws a conclusion of the thesis and points out some limitations in this research. Though there exists some limitations and further study is needed, the paper gives some implication to teachers for the listening teaching in high schools in rural areas.
