Wushu is an illustrious part of the cultural heritage of the Chinese people. It is a product of the progression of China's history, epitomising traditional Chinese culture. It is a sport formed and developed within the land and culture of China. For the past few decades, in order to help wushu progress further and become a sport for the world's people, the country has created a development model based along the lines of Western competitive sports, with competitive wushu at the forefront. Generations of wushu athletes have been trained under the national system. This system has produced many outstanding athletes, but due to the process's emphasis on practical skills and neglect of academics, athletes often have a high standard of the former and a poor level of the latter. This makes it difficult for such a profound art as wushu to develop further and be promoted worldwide. Under the challenges and influence of the market economy, limitations of the national system's three-tiered athlete training system are gradually being exposed. This paper uses such methods as literature searches, surveys, interviews with experts, comparative analysis and statistics to investigate the current state of and analyse the system of the training model for athletes-in-training for competitive wushu routines in Beijing. According to issues found, it also presents a revised training model. Surveys found that students'main motivations in training for wushu are improving physical fitness as well as interest in the art itself; most students want to use their training in the competitive wushu system to win championships or to enter universities and pursue their life goals. The conflict between academics and training is prominent; the main problems that athletes face in education include poor basic schooling, lack of interest in academics, being too exhausted from training and hence having no energy to learn, as well as a poor learning environment. Issues that they face in training include inability to improve their performance despite practising, and inability to keep up in academics. The age and work experience of coaches at the Beijing development base for wushu athletes-in-training have a relatively uniform distribution, although the standard of research is comparatively poor. Coaches'selection of athletes to train depends mostly on the characteristics of wushu events, as well as qualitative experience and measurable indicators.85.71%of coaches will consider the athlete's body build during selection. The coaches'selection approach includes the sending of members by junior sports teams as well as others'recommendations. Funding for training competitive wushu athletes in Beijing comes mainly from the Beijing Sports Bureau, specialised schools'funds and school fees paid by the students themselves. The main factors affecting development of Beijing's competitive routine wushu are comprised of the management system, the coaches, a shortage of trainees and arrangements for athletes'retirement. Systems in need of improvement include those in the areas of selection, balancing of academic teaching wushu training, competition, transportation and retirement arrangements. According to the current state of Beijing's wushu athletes-in-training, and to the United States of America's training model for outstanding athletes, the author proposes a new competitive wushu training model suitable for China's conditions. The model is an integrated'through-train'sports programme from primary school to university level, with emphasis placed on the secondary school section. Its aim is to nurture upcoming competitive wushu routine athletes who excel at both practical ability and academics. It is hoped that this research can provide reference for creating a well-rounded training model for Beijing's competitive wushu athletes-in-training, and give theoretical support to realising its strategic goals.
