This study compares forty 2-3 years old young children's reading features during their two different picture books reading, which is with adults'company, via eye movement research method. Children are from three age groups,24 months,30 months and 36 months. Each child reads the two picture books. After analyzing some important eye movement indicators, such as fixation counts, fixation length, counts of fixation back in different regions and hot pot areas, This thesis is going to answer the following questions:1) what are the characteristics of eye movement in picture books reading among children of 2-3 years old? Do they have the capability to read? 2)How is the development of eye movement between 2-3 years old? On the basis of above two results, this study focuses on the effect of different picture books during children's reading. The main results are as follows:This study has verified the previous research results about 2-3-year-old children's reading capabilities and their development law:1) They like reading picture books.2) They prefer the pictures to the texts and spend most time on the reading of pictures when they're reading.3) They show some interests in the leading role, which are not very high and not showed by some children. Moreover, the study illustrates that children pay attention to the backgrounds of the picture books and the period of 30 months is important for children's reading development.More importantly, this research demonstrates that the picture book is the important factor of the 2-3-year-old children's reading. Its specific impacts are as follows.Firstly, the overall style of picture books affects children's whole reading level. Though these 2-3-year-old children like both picture books, they prefer the warmer and more moving picture book to the other.Secondly, the picture-text layout of picture books affects children's interests in different regions. Though 2-3-year-old children prefer the pictures to the texts, when they read picture books, big text bubbles attract them. Besides, complex background of pictures may disperse children's reading attention to major information.Thirdly, the feature of main characters in picture books affects children's reading. They spend more time on the abstract and complex main character and show more counts of fixation back to the simple and familiar main character. This indicates that the former one cost children more attention and time to read and the latter one make children understand the story more easily.Fourthly, the details of picture books affect children's reading hot spot. Children are more concerned about the animal roles' faces, new, big and bright-colored information when they are reading both picture books. However, there are some differences in reading of the two books. First, the picture book which has more and bigger animal roles make children pay more attention to the roles' faces. Second, when children read the picture book which has too much information, they may overlook some new information. At last, when the information is too much, the location affects children's reading. Children prefer the information in the middle. Finally, some suggestions are raised on the basis of above-mentioned research findings. These suggestions may help some designers create more picture books which are suitable for 2-3-year-old children. Similarly, teachers and parents may choose and use appropriate picture books more orderly.
