The new curriculum reform advocates cultivating student independence and autonomous participation, leading students to harbor suspicions and probe into things. It aims at changing the current situation of over-emphasizing accepting study, memorizing by rote and drilling inflexibly. However, students have mainly been drilling inflexibly in a passive position in English class for a long time. Teachers dominate the right to speak, leaving students little room to think and few opportunities to participate and probe actively. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out investigation about the current situation of student autonomous engagement in junior high school English classroom teaching. It aims at probing into teaching strategies to promote student autonomous participation. This thesis first presents a literature review on student autonomous participation home and abroad. And then, by means of questionnaire, interview surveys and observing, investigate the current situation of student autonomous engagement in junior high school English classroom teaching. The research shows that students listen attentively to others and can choose their learning task and style more autonomously in English classroom, but they're poor at multiple understanding and active participation; they can apply fundamental cognitive strategy and make self-regulation, but they haven't any study aim and plan, being unable to make proper self-assessment; they can feel happy and experience success, but tend to be deeply worried and anxious, lacking self-confidence; besides students' academic achievement, their character, learning motivation, teachers' character, teachers' teaching style and attitude affect student autonomous engagement. In summary, this thesis gives some advice according to the results of the research, some concrete cases presented. For example, further transform teachers' teaching concept and role; establish democracy and harmonious relationship with students; stimulate students'learning motivation; strengthen students'effect self-efficacy, etc.
