With the development of globalization and the times of economic knowledge coming, education reform all over the world is increasingly speeding up in order to train qualified people to meet the needs of the country. In the field of fundamental educational reform, more and more schools and educators attach importance to Inquiry Learning. The so-called Inquiry Learning, which is named and conducted differently in different cuntries and areas, lays crucial stress on the autonomy, inquisitiveness and practicality of the students with the ultimate goal to enhance the students' ability of lifelong learning and creativity in order to meet with the challenge from the new era of information technology.Since the first formal introduction of Inquiry Learning to China at the end of 1990s, a process has evolved from brief introduction to depth exploration among the Chinese educational circle, with some achivements in the application of Inquiry Learning to high school subjects in some areas. There is no doubte that Inquiry Learning will become closer and closer to the teaching of each subject and it will permeate each link of teaching procedure with the ccurriculum reform going on and deepening.However, there still exsit many problems in its theoretical exploration, organization, implement and evaluation, especially in how to combine it with concrete teaching procedures of each subject, which need all the educators pay more attention to. This paper is intended to find a way that can help to effectively combine Inquiry Learning with English teaching at senior high schools.In this thesis, readers can clearly get to know the significance and the objective of this study at first, and the concept, characteristics of Inquiry Learning as well as its development both at home and abroad. Next, some examples to clarify the new priciples, models and the procedures of the application of Inquiry Learning in English teaching at high schools based on the analysis of the New Curriculum Standard. Then, a report of the experiment on the application of Inquiry Learning in English teaching at high schools is followed. In this part, the aim, design, methods, objects and steps are presented in detail. This experiment, which last for a whole term, was carried out mainly in the form of questionnaires and tests for integrating skills according to the plan of English teaching of this term after the aim, content and design of this study were established, involving two classes that were taught by the author. At the end of this essay, the result of this experiment is analysed based on some data. What's more, readers can also get to see the usful enlightenments that come from this experiment, and some disadvantages of it, too.This study tries to provide some good examples and effective methods to the application of Inquiry Learning in English teaching at high schools based on the New Curriculum Standard. Hope that it can help the following researchers. Anyway, all of us must work hard to improve the application of Inquiry Learning in English teaching at high schools!...
