It's generally known that vocabulary plays an important role in English study. With the implementation of the new curriculum, high school English new course standards (2003) pust forward new requirements and standards, so all the English teachers are facing new challenges. Recently, English teachers are also facing an urgent need to resolve the problem:under the new curriculum environment how to make English vocabulary teaching effective.The thesis selected two art-oriented classes in a senior high school in Wuhan,one class was taught in traditional ways and the other was instructed with a lot of vocabulary teaching strategies. After one term experiment, a vocabulary test was conducted,and the data were processed by statistical t- test.The results showed that students in the experimental class possessed more vocabulary than the control class,which proved that vocabulary teaching strategies can effeetively improve students'vocabulary. Finally the thesis makes some suggestions for teaching the vocabulary scientifically in senior high school English classroom.The thesis will focus on the following problems:1. Under the new curriculum environment, the present situation and problems of vocabulary teaching in senior high school English classroom.2. The effective ways of improving vocabulary teaching for art-oriented students who are weak at English.3. The effective ways of going through vocabulary teaching for three senior high school years.
