Listening, speaking, reading and writing are the four basic skills of language. But in China, English listening teaching has been neglected for a long time. As for the English listening teaching in senior high school, there exist many problems between teachers and students as a result of the historical and practical reasons. Most English teachers do not place much importance on listening teaching, and the teaching methods are monotonous, which makes the students lose interest in listening and leads to low listening competence. Therefore, the top priority is to find an approach to improve listening teaching. The Education Department in New English Course Standard (experimental draft) declares adopting the teaching model of TBA. At present, the works have mainly concentrated on the adoption of TBA in reading, writing and speaking, yet few of them have a systematic study of the application of TBA to the English listening teaching, which has long been neglected and is receiving more and more attention at present. Through the analysis of two lessons observed by the author, this paper describes the merits of TBA used in English listening class, the principles of the TBA used by the teacher and the major problems concerning TBA. Therefore, the author hopes to provide some theoretical and practical references for high school English listening teaching under the concept of NECS.
