With the intensifying of the China curriculum reform, many researchers and teachers come to attach importance to the researches and studies of English homework. As the close link between everyday English teaching and the effective ways of the students'out-of-class English study, the English homework is an essential part of English teaching. At present, most of studies of English homework focus on innovative homework, like cooperative homework, task-based homework and open-ended homework, which can be chosen, decided and completed by the students individually. All of these new forms of homework have more advantages compared to conventional homework and reflect the concept that students'development should be centre of education. Homework marking also attracts the attention of English researchers and teachers. Positive homework marking plays an important part in motivating the students to finish their homework better and more effectively. However, the design of hierarchical English homework has not attracted due attention. The author of this thesis adopts the methods of literature, questionnaire and individual interview to investigate and analyze the situation of English homework in Grade 2 in ordinary high schools, including the attitudes which the teachers and the students hold towards conventional English homework, the amount and the level of English homework and the forms of English homework. Based on the results of these researches, this article focuses on what principles should be set when teachers design the hierarchical English homework and how to design practical cases of mixed-level English homework. Moreover, the thesis also offers some solutions to the problems arising from the practice of hierarchical English homework. The research and the case study indicate that regardless of the problems and the difficulties, the practice of the mixed-level English homework can promote the English teaching, arouse the students interest in learning English and enhance their confidence in learning English well. The problems existing in the practice of hierarchical English homework will become the new study projects in the future.
