A Study Of Adequacy Of English Homework In Senior High School

According to The New English Curriculum Standards, English teaching in the high school stage aims to cultivate students’comprehensive language competence of which calls for the overall development of students’language skills, language knowledge, emotional attitudes, learning strategies and cultural awareness. In order to meet the above demands, teachers need to train students in accordance with their cognitive features and their age characteristics. English homework is a significant part in English teaching, which helps students consolidate and master what they have learnt. English homework is the extension of classroom teaching and the necessary auxiliary of English teaching. Therefore, the design and the evaluation of English homework are of great importance in English teaching.However, in China, the effectiveness of English homework has yet to be paid sufficient attention to and the design and evaluation methods of English homework have yet to be caught attention. The present thesis focuses on the study of the design and evaluation of English homework in the hope of helping teachers to reconsider the meaning of English homework so as to reform the traditional pattern of English homework.Firstly, the thesis writer introduces the background of this study. Secondly, the writer summarizes literatures of homework at home and abroad and gives the definitions of homework and English homework. Thirdly, the writer introduces the research design including research questions, the participants from senior high schools, and instrument of questionnaires and interviews. Fourthly, the writer analyzes the results of questionnaires and interviews from four aspects:the amount of homework, the types of homework, the evaluation of homework and the relationship between students’ interests in English and English homework. Lastly, the writer makes some suggestions about teaching and the further study.
