English teaching of high school is an important part of high school, and it is a link of teachers’ teaching andstudents’ study, which cannot be ignored. Many education workers and researchers already recognized theimportance of homework. They know that students’ efficiently preview or review which can effectivelycomplement and expand what they have learned in class. So they attach great importance to English homework.The current research mostly focuses on how to reduce the burden of students’ homework, reform the content andso on. All of these are the practice of “students-oriented” concepts. Whether effective and practical or not, theyare all to be proved in the teaching process.There are many researches on the design of English homework, but the hierarchical English homeworkdesign should be strengthened. This paper tries from another angle, namely the hierarchical English homeworkdesign, to do some studies. The purpose of this study is to prove that hierarchical homework design is moreeffectively than traditional homework design in improving students’ English achievement and interest.Combining the theory of teaching students in accordance with their aptitude, ZPD and MI, and selected theXichuan Middle School students in Qingcheng County as a research object, the author analyzed the currenthomework situations. The author adopts the combination of qualitative and quantitative methods,that is: themethods of literature, questionnaire, and the current situation of the school English homework. The authorfinally found some limits of the present homework design. The questionnaire main includes: English homeworktype, students’ interest in English homework, English homework contents, English homework amount, andEnglish homework difficulty. And by the experiment method, the author tries the hierarchical English homeworkdesign. The author used the mid-term exam as the pre-test in EC and CC. And the final exam was used aspost-test. By comparing the score in EC and CC, the author found that almost no difference between the CC andEC before the experiment. And after the test, the author has carried out the hierarchical homework design in EC.By the pre-test and post-test in EC and the comparison of the results, the author found that the student’sacademic performance and interest have obviously improved in EC. At the same time, the author conducted aquestionnaire before and after the experiment in EC and CC. The aim is to get the present situation of homeworkdesign. By analyzing the experiment and questionnaire, the author found that hierarchical homework caneffectively improve students’ grades and stimulate students’ interest in learning. Specifically, the authordiscussed the theory and principles of hierarchical method in English homework design. The most important isthat the author tried hierarchical English homework design, and analyzed the difficulties and advantages of hierarchical English homework design. At the same time, the author pointed out the limitations of this study, andhoped that the teachers and researchers can do more on this aspect.
