During the period of 1949-1966, an activity related to the anti-illiteracy education was carried out by the Gansu province government. This activity improved people's educational level, and had a wide and profound impact on the society and economy of Gansu province. Thus, researching the origin, developmental trajectory, and the impact of this activity and summing up the experiences and lessons is good for today's and future anti-illiteracy education.At first, the historical background and origin of the anti-illiteracy education was talked about: the situation of the education of the workers and peasants before the foundation of PRC was very backward, but there were some the historical experience from the anti-illiteracy education of Eastern Gansu and from Peili technological school in Sandan county. During the period of 1949-1966, the anti-illiteracy education in Gansu experienced five stages: the initial phase, the correct guidance phase, the healthy develop phase, the semi-health develop phase and the recovery phase. The anti-illiteracy education in Gansu improved people's overall quality and the general mood of society. The social status of the people who benefited from the anti-illiteracy education and the overall quality of women also were improved by the anti-illiteracy education. The anti-illiteracy education in Gansu in 1949-1966 also had a lot of limitations and shortcomings: the number of the people who benefited from this activity was overvalued, undervalue the difficulty and the long-term character of the anti-illiteracy education. In last part of this paper, the anti-illiteracy education in nowadays, the situation of illiteracy among young and middle-aged people, the urgency of the eliminating of illiteracy among young and middle-aged people were analyzed, and some considerations of the anti-illiteracy education in nowadays were suggested.
