As the countries of single nation become fewer and fewer, ethnic diversity has constituted the main feature in the formation of many countries nationwide, among which there exist distinct dissimilarities between minorities and majorities in their politics, economy as well as in education levels. Over the past several decades, many countries attached more and more importance to the minorities' education, and adopted a series of preferential policies for minority students aimed at enhancing the overall development of ethnic minority education. With its obvious ethnic diversity, Australian gave a high priority to education and achieved abundant progress in the indigenous problem in Australia, which often causes great concern at home and abroad, has been being one of the worries of the Australian Government. Confronted with the development situation of indigenous people, Australian Government, under the premise of respecting the dissimilarities between the indigenous and non- indigenous people, has drawn out a series of preferential policies aimed at educational development on the basis of its history, social and economic development.Australia, as a typical multi-cultural country, the pursuit of democracy, equality and cultural diversity is where its value lies. This paper, with the indigenous people's right to vote in the 1960s as the split line and the time of the preferential policies for education issued by the Australian government as the clue, sorts out the development process of preferential policies of Australian indigenous education in great details. Looking through the development of the preferential policy and its implementation, although the policy has achieved results, yet it still has more or less deviation between the policy formulation and implementation and the inadequacies and failures, of course, seems inevitable. After reflection and summary of the preferential education policies of indigenous Australians, this paper concludes some enlightenments about preferential education policy to improve minority education in China, believing that it plays a crucial role in the overall improvement of the minorities' education, and also narrows the minority education gap between minorities and majorities, but in order to meet the changes other elements related, it is also expected to change accordingly.
