Zhu Xi's teaching theory of Chinese reading owns broad and profound contents and exerts a far reading rufluence. The theory is considered as a milestone in Chinese teaching history of reading. In China today when the problem of reading teaching needs solving as soon as possible, scientific cognition and evaluation on Zhu's teaching theory of reading are of great progress.Zhu Xi's propositions on education is related to his opinions on philosophy. The latter is the guidance of his teaching practice; and the former is the application of the latter. To be specific, his propositions on education originated from the theories of human nature and cognition which are part of the idealist philosophy of Zhu Xi. As a branch of Zhu's propositions, his teaching theory of reading is based on his propositions on philosophy.Zhu Xi's teaching theory of reading is composed of his opinions on the teaching's purpose, task, methods and examination. According to Zhu. the teaching purpose, which met the social demands of the age he was in, means to make students the persons of virtue standardized by the feudalist morality. The teaching purpose of reading is both the starting point and the terminal point of all the teaching activities. The task, methods and examination of reading teaching are all carried out with the purpose as their core. Zhu believed that there were three major tasks for the teaching of reading. The first is to train the psychological individuality of students: the second is to train the students', and the third is to teach them to read by themselves. Th teaching methods that Zhu Xi often adopted are figures of speech, discussion.and question-and-answer drill.He examined the results of the teaching by making comparing to his own experience. This is his opinion on examination. His teaching theory of reading was closely related to the traditional Confucian theory of education, his idealist philosophy and his life experience. Farther more, the theory happens to hold the same views with many modern science principles which give prominence to the teacher's leading role and the students' position of main body of the teaching.His theory and practice of reading is wide spread and exerts a far-reaching. His theory inherits and furthermore, enriches the theories of predecessors. His scientific theory greatly enlightens the teaching of Chinese reading today and it also can be used as reference to the teaching of Chinese reading today. However, it owns history limitations.Zhu Xi's teaching theory of Chinese reading fits in with the traditional cultural psychology and is related to the political and cultural background at that time. Seeking the linking point of history and reality, we should interpret and convent Zhu's teaching theory of reading with scientific principles. Rejecting its dross and assimilating its essence, we should make the theory serves the Chinese quality educations better.
