Public School is distinctive in English secondary school education and well known for its age-old history, outstanding social status and unique goal. The article attaches importance hi concluding Public School's characteristic since 20th century, then exploring its historical reasons deeply by studying the action between Public School and English tradition, so that we can look closely at Public School and forecast its future. The same time, the article tries to solve some educational problems in China by assimilating its success.Around Public School's characteristic, the article consists of four parts beside preface and postscript:Firstly: sketching Public School's history for six century, as the article's base; Public School has lasted for six centuries since 14th century. In these days, its growth is constantly changing along with social change, wonderful or depressed. Its characteristic came into being in this course.Secondly: summarizing Public School's characteristic, including management^ goal, teaching quality and organization pattern. Public School is independent and self-government. On one hand, it is separated from government at management and fund; On the other hand, it is of equal rank with public educational system by students, examine and key universities; Public School aims at fostering elites that is excellent in physique, learning and demeanour. Graduates gain the initiative and self-confidence too ; Public School is famous in superior teaching quality because of good teaching insurance, including excellent students and teachers ^ mean test and the sixth grade; Single sex and House system is its notable feature which existed at the beginning;Thirdly: analyzing the historical reasons of Public School's characteristic and concluding: English traditional civilization and Public School mutually affect. The tradition of private education , the yearning of being gentleman and the influence of humanism are the direct reasons. The tradition of private education is the condition of Public School; Being a gentleman is always a wish for middle-class in English.They want to change themselves through Public School; Humanism is helpful to train students'temperament by curriculum and sports. The fundamental reasons are Liberalism and Rationalism. They not only affect on English national character and developmental model directly, but Public School's characteristic indirectly; Lastly: revealing Public School's value. Meanwhile, it can offer benefitical references about key middle school private schools^ moral training and teaching quality in China.
