Understanding plays an important role in the process of mathematics learning. Moreover, the hindrance of mathematical understanding is also one kind of important hindrance of mathematics learning. This thesis intends to study mechanism,cause of formation and methods to overcoming mathematical understanding hindrance from the viewpoint of mathematical education and psychology. The subjects of the present study were particularly about junior middle school students.Firstly,the term"mathematical understanding'was defined in the paper. Its implication and that of "mathematical understanding hindrance"were identified in the perspective of the mathematical teaching and learning. Moreover,six factors which composed of mathematical understanding, mechanism .of mathematical understanding hindrance and approaches of getting rid of mathematical understanding hindrance from the angle of psychological process of understanding were put forward ,analyzed and researched.Secondly,in order to investigate the students' mathematical understanding hindrance,the researcher made some investigations and testing in two schools and deeply analyzed the results of them. Based on the investigations, testing and teaching practice, the mathematical understanding hindrance and their causes from five aspects were explored. The relationships among hindrances of mathematical understanding,the influence of mathematical understanding hindrance on mathematics learning were also discussed.Finally, the researcher suggested some teaching measures of getting over the hindrance of mathematical understanding about junior middle school students based on the teaching practice.
