Curriculum reform is nucleus of educational reform, whether curriculums reformation is successful has direct bearing on the quality of training all kinds of men, and teaching material reform action takes an important effect in curriculums reform.. In fact, the thought of curriculums reform can be carried out depending on teaching materials to a great extent.In China, most people attach great importance to English, and, reform and opening to the outside the world as well as changes in society provide higher requirement for English teaching. Looking closely at our present English teaching , we find the things don't make us sanguine. Many people graduated from the university can't read the foreign original books, even they can neither listen nor speak, and it is difficult for them to talk with foreigners, the qualities of English education is very stagnant. Except the long-term single-aim, the qualities of the English teachers are not high and so on , teaching materials is another important factor that affect English-teaching qualities. For a long stage, expecially , in compiling teaching materials, they neglected the training for the students' ability in practice, the contents are much too difficult and the teaching methods are conservative. All these restrict improving our English educational level. Therefore , it is an important task to reform English teaching materials and build a new English teaching materials system . Without the base of new teaching materials system, English teaching can neither keep long nor be developed deeply and widely . In another meaning , the reform on English teaching materials system is die base and the crux of reforming English curriculums, and it is now the most difficult problem that we can't avoid in English teaching reform.In our China , since 1949 , the development of English teaching materials for middle school have gone through exploring stage , foundational stage and developing stage and so on . English teaching materials in every stage have their special background and reasons , under the special background, English teaching materials corresponding with every reform have their special characteristics. In the first stage, the main characteristic is training the students' reading ability, in the second stage , the main characteristic is training the students' basic skill and stressing political contents; in the third stage , the main characteristic is training the students' ability in using the language and grammar; in the forth stage, the main characteristic is training the ability in comprehensive using the language and innovation. From the characteristics of the development of English materials for middle school since 1949, and from the approach of English teaching materials reform at present , we can see the developing direction of the modernization, integration and so on . At the same time, English teaching materials in the future will reflect its intirety, flexibility and the idea of task-based language teaching.
