ObjectiveTo understand the relationship between the mental health condition of the undergraduates for different educational purposes in military medical universities and its related factors and to provide the corresponding strategies for the mental health education according to the results of our research.MethodsUsing EPQ, Symptom Checklist 90(SCL-90),Simplified Coping Style Questionaire,Perceived Social Support Scale(PSSS),The Self-Esteen Scale(SES), Life Event Scale,The Self-Attitude Scale.2826 undergraduates from a military medical university were investigated. Their educational purposes included the education of 7-year-course for the Master degree, the education for the civic purpose, the education for the military purpose and the education for military-or-civic optional purpose. The data was analyzed by using correlation analysis and multiple stepwise regression analysis, and their mental health condition and its related factors were described.Results(1) There were significant differences between groups of the educational purpose. Generally, the students of 7-year-course for the Master degree had the highest level of mental health condition, and thestudents of the civic-or-military optional purpose had the most mental health problems.(2) The related factors, such as the response pattern, the personality, the family support, the daily life event and the sleeping condition, etc had different characteristics in different groups of the educational purpose.(3) Within one group of the educational purpose, the mental health condition was different in different grades.(4) The mental health condition of all the subjects was significantly correlated with the factors of the response pattern, the daily life event, the social support, the self-esteem, the attitude towards self and the quality of sleep, etc.(5) The influential factors of the mental health condition and their extent of influence varied according to the educational purpose.(6) Each influential factor influenced the mental health condition in five patterns.Conclusion(1) The mental health education should be aimed directly at the characteristics of the students for different educational purposes and their grades.(2) The mental health education should be reinforced according to theinfluential factors which affect the mental health condition to cultivate the students' personality, to help them adapt to the training and to reinforce the education for active coping.
