This paper analyses the current situations of English language teaching in middle school; applies Widdowson's and Hymes' communicative theory to English listening and speaking teaching and aims to improve students' listening and speaking competence.Firstly, the writer makes a brief survey of the present conditions of the listening and speaking teaching at home and abroad, and puts forward the teaching objects at middle school. Then, the main problems on middle school English listening and speaking teaching are analyzed out of wide respects such as teaching methodology, teacher' academic ability, students' own problem, context of situation, and social cultural factors. After that, the communicative approach of English listening and speaking teaching is discussed. On the basis of analyzing the relationship between listening and speaking, the writer points out the principles in the listening and speaking teaching; probes into the ways to improve students' listening and speaking competence. A large space of the thesis is devoted to discussing the application of the communicative theory in actual listening and speaking teaching. By designing lots of activities, the students gain more opportunities to practice English and then their listening and speaking skills can be improved. The last chapter is a conclusion of arguments out of this paper. The writer believes that applying communicative theory to English listening and speaking teaching is effective and practical in developing middle school students' communicative competence. English teachers should actively study this new method and improve the students' ability of using language.
