Listening and speaking are a communication course of oral language messages. The ability of listening and speaking is an important part of Chinese language capability for Chinese students. As Mr. Ye Shengtao ever said. "It is necessary for every pupil to practice listening, speaking, reading and writing well."With the development of the science and culture, the degree of information propagation is improved a lot and the communication between people becomes more frequent. It is proved that listening and speaking covers 74.3% in the people's language activities.Practice in listening and speaking can help students improve the ability of reading, writing and thinking as well as their ability to associate with others and refine their manners and cultural accornp lishments. It can also promote to develop in every side. Paying great attention to fostering the ability of listening and speaking is a common trend in Chinese teaching. Strengthening the teaching in listening and speaking not only can improve Chinese language teaching, but also can develop pupils' intelligence , feeling , gift and personality.But listening and speaking have not played an important role in Chinese teaching in the secondary school at present. In our country, especially in some backward areas, when students enter middle schools, listening and speaking will not have the same position as writing and reading do. And maybe they will be neglected.This thesis deals with some problems in listening and speaking teaching and the author tries to provide the teachers with a set of feasible tactics to help them to carry out the aims of Chinese teaching and enhance students' ability of listening and speaking.This thesis has been established on the basis of the theory on contemporary Chinese teaching in listening and speaking, referring to the Chinese teaching syllabus and the requirement about Chinese text books published by Renmin Publishing House. The materials and data come from the two questionnaires and the standard tests on the students' listening and speaking ability.This thesis is divided into five parts.The first is the foreword, which expounds the significance, the purpose, the current situation and the reasons why listening and speaking in Chinese teaching is ignored at present.In the second part, the author explains the ways and the methods in which the questionnaires are designed, what has been investigated and how to count and analyse the materials.In the third part, the author counted and analysed the materials and data from teachers and students about the current situation of Chinese listening and speaking in middle schools.In the fourth part, the author stated the level of the students in listening and speaking practice in which one test was taken to describe the students' listening ability from sounding, meaning, judging, memorizing, imagining and evaluating, the other was taken to appraise the students' speaking ability from reading aloud, comprehension, thinking, lecturing, oral composition, discussion in class, debating and covering.The last is the conclusion. There are two suggestions and some constructive strategy and tactics, which are based on the essential teaching principles, the requirement from the teatbooks and the ability aims for students to achieve.
