As Grammar-translation Approach has taken a long-term effect on instruction, most of class hours are spent with the teacher lecturing and the students watching and listening in the traditional approach to teaching. The students work individually on assignments, and their cooperation is discouraged. Such teacher - centered instructional methods have repeatedly been found inferior to instruction. In the middle of the 1980s, an official survey in 15 cities and provinces revealed that middle school students found it hard to use the English they had learned for communication. One key reason was that the traditional approach to language teaching passed down from the 1930s still dominated middle school classroom teaching. The teachers taught the students English knowledge completely according to what the textbooks said while neglecting to foster the students' techniques and skills in learning and using the language. In such an environment the students passively learn English without ideal results , which has led to the incomplete development of the students in their English learning. Students, although they were not bad in written examination ,couldn't communicate with English native speakers after several years' English learning in senior middle school. Since Constructivism was introduced into English teaching, English teaching in senior middle schools has had a bright future. Meanwhile, as Internet computing becomes a norm in everyday life, web-based teaching has been carried on extensively in all kinds of schools and universities worldwide. Web-based teaching is acceptable to many people. However, it is only on the junior stage in China. Some teaching administrations and schools have inaccurate understanding or misunderstanding of web-based teaching and therefore it hinders to some extent the web-based teaching in China from developing smoothly. In order to better the process of senior middle school English classroom teaching, this paper, according to actual circumstances of English instruction in senior middle schools of our country, firstly studies the Web-based CAI classroom teaching modes on the basis of the author's experiences in English Web-based teaching and the development of Web-based CAI both at home and abroad, attempting to integrate teaching & learning theories---namely, Constructive Learning Theory, applied linguistics and the network technique of computer for a preliminary research onthe Web-based CAI classroom modes in English teaching in senior middle schools .Furthermore it also analyzes the situation, meaning construction and collaboration factors and their effects on learners' initiative and creativity in the learning process of achieving an effective meaning construction. Thirdly, the paper states the five available classroom Web-based teaching modes, their teaching methodology & strategies, software designing principles & framework and instructional evaluation framework. These classroom teaching modes are the classroom lecturing mode of Web-based CAI, the classroom interactive teaching mode of Web-based CAI, the classroom virtual reality teaching mode of Web-based CAI, the individual learning supervising mode of Web-based CAI and the individual drilling and practising mode of Web-based CAI.Through an experimental research, the paper manages to prove the validity of these five Classroom teaching modes of Web-based CAI in SMSEC. The author utilized non-equivalent control group design to do the teaching experiment by choosing two natural classes taught by the same teacher (one class as the experimental group; the other as the control group) without randomization. The experimental result is that the average score of the post-tests in listening, speaking, reading, writing and the cross-cultural consciousness is much higher than that of the pre-tests in the same items.
