Supervisor: Professor Wang De-hai.In recent years, the huge changes have taken place in the external environment of the development of agriculture as well as rural economy in China, especially after China's entry in WTO. Consequently, it is very urgent to find out a reasonable way to deal with the challenges caused by the new situation for sustainable rural development.This paper aims to bring forward recommendations for improvement of vocational education system in china based on factors that influence agricultural vocational education by analysings agricultural vocational education system and the farmers' learning needs for technologies as well as the trends of the education development in China and abroad. The study recommends seven strategies which can be adopted to improve vocational education system in the new situation as the following: first, to convert ideology of traditional vocational education to the new guidelines of school running; second, to strengthen the relations with other forms of education in order to be adapted to the new education system; third, to make clarification of .the objectives and offer reasonable multi-disciplinaries to meet the need of society; fourth, to strengthen the capacity building for improvement of staff qualification; fifth, to increase input for the construction of experimental field; six, to provide job guidance for students in employment and to enhance the social function of agricultural vocational education for the modernization of agriculture and the regional rural development both in social and economical sectors in China.
