So far, the Chemistry Olympiad for middle school students has been accepted as one of the major effective means to train and try out excellent students in our country. Every year, tens of thousands of high school students participate in its trainings at all levels. As it turns out, the Chemistry Olympiad plays an important part in trying out distinguished students for universities and colleges. And brilliant achievements have been made in the teaching of the Chemistry Olympiad, which has attracted the world's attention. On the other hand, there are some problems with the Chemistry Olympiad which can not be overlooked, like training inflexibly by stuffing exercises and grade-oriented practices.Over years of my engagement in the teaching of the Chemistry Olympiad, I have a strong sense that researching the laws of the Chemistry Olympiad is of great importance to the development of students' abilities and psychological qualities. So it makes a very good sense to research on it. Not only it will significantly contribute to the organization and training of the Chemistry Olympiad at all levels but it will also directly contribute to some practical work like the training of top students and qualified teachers, the construction of courses and the research into examinations. Besides, it, to some extent, will help find out solutions to the problems so far existing in the Chemistry Olympiad.Through nearly 10 years of my teaching experience in the Chemistry Olympiad, I have come to realize that its teaching should take the rules as follows: First, a new teaching mode of the Chemistry Olympiad containing advanced educational concepts is to be established. Through my own teaching practice of the Chemistry Olympiad, I have discovered the mode of self-study-and-innovation to be a good one for the Chemistry Olympiad. Second, the teaching of the Chemistry Olympiad should focus its attention on both the development of students' abilities and theirpsychological qualities, which are complementary and indispensable to each other. Third, its teaching should pay particular attention to the application of theories of modern education and psychology. Finally, find out the differences between the teaching of the Chemistry Olympiad and routine teaching and then determine its particular teaching tactics by analyzing the characteristics of the Chemistry Olympiad including its history, organizational form, test characteristics and teachingaims. In recent years I have made some preliminary research into the teaching of the Chemistry Olympiad covering the aspects above. And some achievements have been made in it as well. It has been proved that the teaching of the Chemistry Olympiad is supposed to establish a particular teaching mode to live up to modern educational concepts. In addition it should or can coordinate both the development of students' abilities and their psychological qualities. Yet, the teaching of the Chemistry Olympiad is an intricate system. How to train top students effectively through the activity of the Chemistry Olympiad remains to be probed into. More teaching laws contained in the teaching of the Chemistry Olympiad is yet to be seen. Some teaching practices and methods are yet to be improved, too. In short, I will continue with my research into the teaching of the Chemistry Olympiad to find out more.
