It is practical and meaningful to foster students' mathematics application ability in secondary vocational school. How to understand and implement it during mathematics teaching is worth considering carefully. The paper probes into the present situation in teaching and studying mathematics application problem, and analyzes main factors influencing mathematics application ability by using the investigation method. Moreover, the paper, under the theory guidance of mathematics pedagogy and mathematics psychology, puts forward corresponding teaching strategy on training students' mathematics application ability, at last carries out a demonstration study.Application is indeed the study goal especially for the students in the secondary vocational school. To make students apply the learned knowledge in solving various natural and social problems is the final goal of school education. It is not only the need of mathematics development but also the requirement of mathematics teaching goal to combine mathematics teaching into mathematics application well. Therefore, during the process of teaching mathematics, the teachers should not only teach mathematics knowledge, but also train the consciousness of mathematics application so as to improve the students' mathematics application ability. In order to achieve the above goal, the paper, under the guidance of mathematics cognizing theory, does the research on the following aspects: main pattern in solving mathematics application problems, mathematics problem-solving factors and psychological mechanism, the function of question description in mathematics problem-solving, recognition model to mathematics problem-solving pattern and the cognizing psychology on the base of the latest research at home and abroad on the cognizing psychology in recent years in mathematics application and problem-solving field. After that, the paper does an analysis on the factors affected mathematics application ability by actual test and investigation, then put forward the following symptoms existing in solving mathematics application problem in the students in secondary vocational school:1.Students are short of basic skills, such as the ability of question comprehension, the ability of generalizing (students don't know how to treat actual problem as mathematics problem); the ability of words transition and pattern recognition; mathematics basic knowledge and basic operation and so on.2.Students have considerably defect in terms of study motivation and study attitude towards the mathematics application, e.g. students have not lots of contact with real mathematics problem; students dislike the words description and are not able to comprehend the problem description written in Chinese; students cannot apply freely the learned concepts, formula and method when needed; students cannot find the correct mathematics relation and comparatively simple calculation method.According to the above survey, the paper puts forward the following strategies in teaching mathematics application problem-solving: 1.Pay more attention to foster students' mathematics application consciousness.2. Strengthen the training of problem representation and foster students' pattern recognition ability. In order to prove the effectiveness of the above strategies, I have done an experiment in a class for a term. There are an experimental class and control class. In the experimental class, I changed the teaching structure and set additional activities in class. Moreover I strengthened the training of problem representation and fostered students' ability of pattern recognition. The experimental result: shows that to strengthen mathematics application teaching can not only improve students' skill level of comprehending and analyzing problems and the ability of mathematics application, but also enhance students' study achievement greatly.
