Context is the most frequently studied theme in pragmatics. During a long time in the history, experts have done a lot of researches on context, that's because people's speech communication can never be done without context, and it's also because people have never stopped trying to adapt themselves to different contexts.At the same time, during the reforming and developing of Chinese teaching, the theory of pragmatics, especially of context adaptation is becoming more and more important. One basic point of students' language qualities is the communicative ability of spoken language and the comprehensive ability of written language, but these abilities cannot be achieved without the utterance context. Otherwise Chinese teaching will lose a basic core, students' Chinese abilities will be nothing at all.In this thesis, the author reviews some popular definitions of context and a lot of relevant theories, and then generalizes the definitions of context. Beginning with different kinds of context, this paper is trying to make it orderly, and to make the nature of context clearer. Furthermore, after systematically generalizing and concluding all the theories of context adaptation, this paper pointsout that all these research results are of great value to the teaching of Chinese reading. Finally, from the point of teaching, among different complex factors, this paper focuses on the performances and functions of context, which affects the comprehending of object utterance. From both extra and inner context, this paper, using the middle school texts as language materials, analyzes the influence of verbal context, time and place of pragmatics, speech style and the background knowledge of object utterance, culture surroundings, nation psycho and so on, upon the comprehending of utterance. It concludes the basic features and rules of context adaptation, and then finds out the significance of context adaptation to utterance comprehending and Chinese teaching.
