The purpose of the study was to evaluate the quality of the illustrations in the compulsory education standard test Chinese textbook for grade one in primary school (Published by PeiKing normal university press).Questionnaire investigations had been made and an experiment also had been done concurrently. The results showed that most teachers acknowledged that these illustrations were fit to the students in grade one. They are improved. On one hand, they are considered to promote reading because they facilitate memorizing, interpreting, imagining and so on. On the other hand, they are considered to hinder reading because they distract students from text reading. The results of questionnaire are self-contradictory. By using eye-movement study method, the results showed that high consistency between texts and illustrations is good to text reading. About half of the illustrations are not proper on consistency between texts and illustrations, so the effects of these illustrations can't fully bring into play. The consistencies between the texts and illustrations need increasing. Comparing two studies, the experimental conclusion is more reliable.
