Since the early 1980s, people in the rural areas began to migrate into cities. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, there came the so-called "peasant workers' tide" i.e. farmers' frenzied hunt for work in cities. At present, the number of the peasant workers is more than one hundred million. Viewing from the angle of the whole society, those peasant workers have become a unique social colony with special identity and social status. The peasant workers play an important role in impelling the economic circulation between the rural areas and the cities. They are an indispensable part in urban life. Yet the urban society usually put emphasis on their negative influences and discriminates against their peasant identity. And it seldom pays attention to their adaptation situation, especially those self-employed laborers who are in business in the cities. This thesis tries to make a diachronic research on the adaptation situation of the peasant workers in the cities and to put forward some suggestions on how to solve the existing problems under the background'of social development. It can be divided into four parts. The first part is an introduction. It mainly introduces the origin and meaning of the topic, the research background, the definition of some concepts, the train of thoughts and the research method. The second part analyzes the adaptation situation of the peasant workers after the reform and opening up from three aspects: economically, socially and psychologically by dividing it into three stages. The third part summarizes the characteristics of each stage and the reasons for their emergence according to the different policies and systems in different stages. In the fourth part, the author puts forward some suggestions on how to improve the living conditions of the peasant workers.
