Environmental consciousness has become an important criterion to assess the achievement and culture of citizens. An active and responsible citizen must first be responsible for the environment of the society and the mankind. A noticeable characteristic of this curriculum revision is that it takes the student-centered approach, focusing on comprehensive development of students by requiring all students to achieve such development. One of the objectives of this new curriculum is to "develop students' initial creativity, practical capability, scientific and human accomplishment, and environmental consciousness". Compared with the concepts of grasping the environmental knowledge, acquiring environmental probing skills, and reinforcing the understanding of environmental importance, the environment education is more important as it fosters the internal changes of students with external forces. This self-education will gradually grow into explicit and concrete environmental behavior.This research experiments to cultivate the environmental consciousness of junior high school students based on the principal of attitude forming and student self-development. It combines the environment education theory by embracing it into teaching and extracurricular activities, as well as organizing other types of environmental education programs. The development approach of this research includes: (1) lecturing, guiding, and creating scenarios which promote thinking; (2) self-educating with help sessions, active participation, and self-improving; (3) analyzing and discussing, external reinforcing, and internal adjusting; (4) innovating through summarizing, goal reaching, and self-enhancing. The proposed procedures are: lecturing and guiding - self-learning with help sessions - analyzing and discussing - summarizing and innovating. Experiments show that this education strategy motivates students' subjective dynamics. This proposition enhances individual's capability of independent thinking and problem solving while performing the environment education. The results show that the education procedure helps increase students' interest in geology and assists in building the consciousness of environmental caring, which fosters the development of individuals. The education procedure also facilitates the transformation of the environmental consciousness into students' active behavior.
