The purpose of this study is to carry out environmental education in physics teaching. In the course of the study, it is necessary to know the level of students' environmental awareness and knowledge, and then to explore ways in implementing environmental education in physics teaching.Static groups comparing approach is used in this study. First of all, a test is held among some students in Grade Eight to know the level of their environmental awareness and environmental knowledge. Then some selected materials about environmental knowledge that are related to the textbook are taught in physics classes. Afterwards another test is given to the students to check the result. At the meantime, interviews and open discussions can be organized to know students' opinions in terms of physics classroom education for environmental issues, as well as experimental results. The objectives of this study are two classes in Grade Eight from an ordinary secondary school in Beijing and one class is used in contrast with the other. The results of the experiment are evaluated by quantitative analysis methods supplemented by qualitative methods. This study used a self-designed questionnaire "On students' environmental awareness and environmental knowledge" and descriptive statistics and t test for quantitative analysis.The study shows that: classroom teaching is not the primary means for our students to receive environmental education; students' basic environmental awareness is relatively good, but there is still need to guide them in actions of environment protection; students are not yet clear about some of the causes of environmental problems.The experimental teaching showed that: environmental education in physics classes plays a certain role in promoting the students' environmental awareness. In the interview with students, they expressed their willingness to learn some environmental knowledge in physics classrooms. By contrasting the two tests before and after the experimental teaching, it is indicated that this experiment have had a significant impact on their environmental awareness and knowledge.It is suggested that further research should be made into the contents and methods of environmental education in physics classes.
