As a result of the efforts of China's colleges and universities to enlarge their enrolment, general high schools nowadays are becoming more popular and it is becoming increasingly hard for secondary vocational schools to survive. Facing this unfavorable situation, some weak general high schools and vocational high schools in some provinces and municipalities are beginning to try a new high school model—comprehensive high school—to revitalize themselves. It is, therefore, of great significance to study its theory, practice and regular patterns for its sustainable development. This paper gives a deep analysis of the background, significance, mode and characteristics of comprehensive high schools. The theoretical significance of some current theories such as people's need for full development and lifelong education, and educational democracy for the running of comprehensive high schools is also discussed. The paper also analyzes the motivation, favorable conditions and possible problems of vocational schools in their efforts to run comprehensive schools, and the guiding principle and working plan are also put forward in this paper.Lastly, the relevant teaching documents drafted in the case study in Qian'an city, Hebei province, in which I participate, are provided, hoping to give reference for other schools intending to try comprehensive schools.
