The teaching of classics reading plays a significant role in traditional educational system as an important Chinese teaching method and content And the latest Chinese teaching syllabus has re-expounded its nature and educational concept embedded in it, while putting more emphasis on its practical significance. In the historical background of prevailing mass culture, the brand-new socio-cultural context poses great challenge for the traditional Chinese education esp. reading instruction. Furthermore, Chinese education shoulders the task of passing on splendid Chinese culture, constructing the personality of learners, achieving duties of language and literature. On base of these, we will analyze classics reading which is function, context and significance.The thesis consists of four parts.Chapter 1: It is a common view that popular culture has become the most important role in the social culture field at present age, which has been a serious challenge to traditional concepts of the world, life and beauty. In this context, classic reading education consisting of specific reading ways and attitude to classic works has to be up against immense difficulties, therefore we should realize and study classics reading more deeply than ever. In a word, this part is our premise and historical background to discuss classics reading.Chapter 2 dwells exclusively on the etymological origin of the term "classics", pointing out the denotative meaning of "Jing" and " Dian". And moreover, its connotative shade, "the important collection of books". Then the thesis leads to the discussion of the interior and exterior conditions for the shaping of the classic works.Chapter 3 introduces the functions of classic reading in terms of cultural inheritance and culture absorption, and the acquisition of Chinese attainment. Specifically it is related to the learning of national culture and multiculture, and to the enhancement of learners' reading ability. At last, it focuses on the exploration of the learning style of classic reading by providing some cases regarding reading teaching and learning. It is concluded that classics reading is an aesthetic, reflective and experiential reading, and learners are greatly enlightened during the process of classics reading.Chapter 4 suggests specific methods of classics reading. We mink that there are three main mode in this question: first is a kind of aesthetic mode, that is to say classics reading is a process of appreciating beauty; second is a kind of philosophical mode, mat is to say classics reading is a process of thinking deeply; third is a kind of experience mode, mat is to say classics reading is a process of entering real life.
