| Task-based Language Teaching (TBLT) was introduced to China at the turn of the century. It has been verified that TBLT plays an important part in arousing students'interest, developing their capabilities and enhancing their comprehensive qualities. However, in China, TBLT,which is in the experimental stage, has not been practiced in the classroom successfully. Although reading comprehension in China has been placed in a dominant position, yet no remarkable success has been achieved, especially in middle school English teaching and learning. As English teachers, we should take a positive attitude towards TBLT and make great efforts to improve English language teaching and learning and to enhance its efficiency by flexibly adopting the task-based approach. For the reasons mentioned above, this thesis discusses the theories of reading and TBLT, and it also explores how the ideas of TBLT can be applied to the classroom English reading comprehension in middle schools in China by means of designing and accomplishing effective teaching tasks. The purpose of the study is to acquire a good knowledge of the theories of reading and TBLT and to put forward a proposal on how to encourage students to develop effective reading competence. As TBLT is still in its beginning stage in China, it is necessary to make more experiments and conduct more researches on it. With its wide spread and application in language teaching in China, new task-based methods will be created, which will satisfy the various needs of language teaching at different levels. The future of the application of TBLT is rosy and encouraging, hence its profound implication.
